Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes have the same characteristic which is the body’s inability to make or use insulin. Type 1 begins in childhood while type 2 diabetes typically begins in young adulthood.

The major risk factors for type 2 diabetes are obesity or being overweight, belonging to certain ethnic groups, high blood pressure, family history, age and lack of exercise. Now there is not much that you can do about your family history, which ethnic group you belong too, or your age. But you do have control over blood pressure, weight and your amount of daily exercise.

The greatest risk for type 2 diabetes is obesity so to control the onset of diabetes is to control your weight. This can be managed by controlling your diet and eating foods that are good for you and limiting foods that aren’t good for you. If you are very over weight, you should lose weight until you are near your normal or optimal weight and maintain this weight with a healthy diet.

A sedate lifestyle is another risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Everyone should exercise a least three times a week. This will also help control your weight. Everyone should start an exercise program as a major lifestyle change. It is believed that lack of exercise in children and teenagers is the leading cause of the obesity epidemic that is currently in the United States. Because of television and video games, the sedate lifestyle that Americans currently live is causing the rise in obesity and in turn causing the rise in type 2 diabetes.

Exercise and diet also will control your blood pressure which is another risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Your blood pressure should be at the best level for your age group and you should discuss this with your doctor if it isn’t.

Whatever your risk factors for diabetes may be, there are things that you can do to delay or prevent diabetes. To manage your risk of diabetes, a person should manage their blood pressure, keep weight near normal range, get moderate exercise at least three times a week and eat a balanced diet.
