Foot care and diabetes is an important area of education for newly diagnosed diabetics especially since the primary care for the feet is the responsibility of the diabetic to prevent and control problems
This problem with the feet is because of nerve damage in the feet and the narrowing of blood vessels in the legs. These two problems can combine to cause a tiny cut to become extremely infected and lead to gangrene of the foot. Gangrene can lead to amputation of the foot or leg. If a diabetic has nerve damage in a foot, they are not able to tell when they have a small cut or any skin damage and an infection could start before it is even noticed. And with poor circulation, when there is a cut or any skin damage, there is insufficient blood flowing to the foot to fight the infection.
If feet or toes are blue or pale – these are symptoms of poor circulation. And if a foot or toes feels numb or tingles, this is a symptom of nerve damage. If a diabetic has any of these symptoms they should talk with their primary care physician immediately.
If at any time, a diabetic notices that a foot feels hot, is red or if they are running a fever, it is extremely important to get to their doctor as soon as possible. Infections in the foot can get worse quickly and gangrene can develop quickly also.
Prevention is the best way to avoid problems with the feet. Proper foot care is a daily responsibility and best method of prevention. This includes regularly washing and inspecting feet. The diabetic should carefully inspect the feet for small cuts, breaks in the skin, blisters, corns or calluses. Corns or calluses should be treated by a diabetic’s physician or nursing staff. Small cuts should be treated with antibiotic ointments. It is also extremely important to dry the feet completely especially between the toes as moisture is a breeding ground for fungus and other infections. It is extremely important to keep toe nails properly trimmed to avoid ingrown toenails as this can also be a source of infection or foot problems. Diabetics should never go bare footed.
