Cinnamon and other herbs lower diabetes risk or can help with the symptoms of diabetes. These herbs and other substances are being studied in laboratories all over the world.

Because of the lifetime management of diabetes, this disease can become very expensive to control. Because of the ever increasing cost of managing this chronic disease, many drug companies are investing billions into finding a cure for this disease. And new and better medications are being studied, many of which are herbal cures that have been used in some cultures for years.

In this search for new ways to lower the risk of diabetes or for new medication to help with symptoms, there have been found several Amazon jungle root herbs with reported abilities to lower blood glucose levels, normalize the frequency of urination, and eliminate glucose in the urine of diabetics. In Brazil, Pfaffia root has been used for years to treat the symptoms of diabetes. Pata-de-vaca is also widely used in Brazil for the treatment of diabetes.

In order to provide new medications in the treatment of diabetes, researchers must find what substances are in these two herbs as well as other herbs and in the lab perhaps to reconstitute these ingredients. Some of these new medications may be able to help people with few symptoms of diabetes, control their disease.
In China and other parts of Asia there are many herbs being studied that help with blood glucose levels as well as some that relieve the effects of narrowing blood vessels which is a common complication that occurs with diabetes.
A study conducted in Germany showed cocoa with high flavanol improves cardiovascular health. The study was specifically to test the effectiveness of the cocoa with long term use. 41 stable Type-2 diabetics were given cocoa with high dose flavanol as compared with low flavanol dosage cocoa. The researchers did find that the flavanol found in cocoa has a positive effect on FMD response in diabetics. Researchers concluded that these results happened by increased production of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a chemical that sends signals to arteries to relax and widen in response to increased blood flow. This relaxation of the arteries takes stress off the heart and blood vessels. Constricting of blood vessels is a common complication of diabetes.
Doctors in Canada are currently studying the chemical in chili peppers that makes them so hot. They are testing this chemical called capsaicin with mice that have Type-1 diabetes. Working on the theory that islet cells which normally produce insulin in the pancreas are surrounded by pain nerves which are miscommunicating with the brain, scientist are destroying these pain nerves with injections of capsaicin. Mice with Type-1 diabetes recover almost completely as the islet cells start producing insulin immediately. There have been similar results with mice that have Type-2 diabetes.

And there are other researchers studying the chemical reaction between cinnamon and honey and why this combination seems to help with some of the symptoms of diabetes.
